Statement on the closure of Clinic 554 in Fredericton

“New Brunswick physicians are concerned about the news of Clinic 554’s impending closure. The New Brunswick Medical Society has reached out to government concerning this and will be engaging in conversation with the Department of Health immediately. The NBMS has asked in the past for a review of both women’s health services and services for LGBTQ patients, and Clinic 554’s impending closure underscores the importance of ensuring we are providing adequate access to women’s health services. New Brunswick is one of the only provinces that doesn’t fund abortions in private clinics, forcing many women to pay for the service. This is unacceptable; women should not have to pay for this service out of pocket. Physicians and patients recognize the valuable service that Clinic 554 provides not only as a family practice, but also as a health resource for LGBTQ patients across New Brunswick.”
