Statement on overnight emergency department closures
“The New Brunswick Medical Society recognizes that the design of our province’s health system must evolve and modernize to reflect today’s and tomorrow’s population needs. The impact of substantial changes to our health system are always a source of concern for physicians. We will monitor the impact of today’s announcement closely to understand the implications that the overnight closures of six rural emergency departments may have on patient care. The Medical Society expects that neighbouring hospitals receiving more patients will be properly supported with additional resources and that ambulance capacity will be added during peak times. We will be monitoring the situation closely and listening to our emergency department physicians to ensure that these changes reflect the future needs of our health system and that patient safety is not negatively impacted.”
